The Present Perfect Continuous: Formation and Usage
The present perfect continuous describes an action that started in the past and continues up to the present, emphasizing the duration.
Formation
Subject + have/has + been + verb-ing. I have been studying for two hours. She has been working here since 2020.
Uses
- Actions that started in the past and continue now: I have been waiting for an hour.
- Actions that have recently stopped with a visible result: You’re wet. Has it been raining?
Difference with Present Perfect Simple
Present perfect simple focuses on completion: I have read three books. Present perfect continuous focuses on duration: I have been reading for three hours.
Exercises
