The Past Perfect Tense: Formation and Usage
The past perfect tense expresses an action that was completed before another action in the past. It helps establish the sequence of past events.
Formation
Subject + had + past participle. Example: I had finished my homework before dinner. She had left when I arrived.
Uses
- Past action before another past action: By the time I arrived, they had already eaten.
- Cause and effect in the past: I failed because I hadn’t studied enough.
- In reported speech: He said he had seen the movie.
Signal words
By the time, already, yet, just, after, before, never, ever.
