Introduction
One of the most confusing areas in English grammar is the three expressions “used to”, “be used to”, and “get used to”. Although they look similar, each has a different meaning and grammatical structure. Mastering their distinction is essential for Bac exams and fluent English use.
1. Used To + Infinitive (Past Habits)
Structure: Subject + used to + base verb
Meaning: Describes past habits or states that no longer happen in the present.

- ❌ “I use to play” — incorrect
Negative: Subject + didn’t use to + base verb

Question: Did + subject + use to + base verb?
“Did you use to smoke?”
2. Be Used To + Noun/Gerund (Accustomed)

Meaning: Describes something that is familiar or normal; something the subject is accustomed to.
