Personal Pronouns and Possessive Adjectives: Rules, Examples and Exercises — 1st Year Secondary English

Subject: English | Level: 1st Year Secondary | Unit: Grammar — Pronouns and Possessives

Learning Objectives

  • Identify subject and object personal pronouns
  • Use possessive adjectives correctly
  • Distinguish between possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns
  • Apply pronouns correctly in sentences and paragraphs

Introduction

Personal pronouns and possessive adjectives are basic building blocks of English. They help us avoid repetition and make our speech and writing more natural. In the Algerian secondary curriculum, mastering these is essential for constructing correct sentences from the first year.

1. Subject Pronouns

Subject pronouns replace the subject of a sentence (the person or thing that does the action).

Pronoun Meaning (Arabic) Example
I أنا I am a student.
You أنت / أنتم You are my friend.
He هو He is a teacher.
She هي She is from Algeria.
It هو/هي (لغير العاقل) It is a book.
We نحن We are classmates.
They هم / هن They are happy.

2. Object Pronouns

Object pronouns replace the object of a sentence (the person or thing that receives the action).

Subject → Object Example
I me She called me.
You you I see you.
He him Give it to him.
She her I know her.
It it Take it.
We us He told us.
They them I helped them.

3. Possessive Adjectives

Possessive adjectives show ownership or belonging. They always come before a noun.

Subject Possessive Adj. Arabic Example
I my ملكي This is my book.
You your ملكك Your pen is here.
He his ملكه His car is red.
She her ملكها Her dress is nice.
It its ملكه The cat drank its milk.
We our ملكنا Our school is big.
They their ملكهم Their house is new.

Important Notes

  • Possessive adjectives are always followed by a noun: “my book” ✓, “my book” NOT “mine book”
  • “Its” vs “It’s”: “Its” = possessive; “It’s” = It is. Example: The dog wagged its tail. / It’s a nice day.
  • Do not confuse “your” (possessive) with “you’re” (you are).
  • “Their” (plural possessive) vs “there” (place) vs “they’re” (they are).
