Adjectives: Describing People and Things
An adjective is a word that describes a noun. It tells us more about a person, place, or thing.
Types of Adjectives
- Appearance: tall, short, beautiful, handsome, old, young
- Personality: kind, clever, friendly, brave, honest, generous
- Size: big, small, large, tiny, huge
- Color: red, blue, green, yellow, black, white
- Shape: round, square, flat, long, short
- Opinion: good, bad, excellent, wonderful, terrible
Order of Adjectives (OSASCOMP)
When we use several adjectives, the usual order is:
Opinion → Size → Age → Shape → Color → Origin → Material → Purpose
Example: “A beautiful (opinion) small (size) old (age) round (shape) green (color) Algerian (origin) wooden (material) box.”
Adjective Position
- Before a noun: “She is a kind person.”
- After a verb (be, seem, look, feel, taste): “He is tall.” “This food tastes delicious.”
Exercises
1) Underline the adjectives: The beautiful girl has long black hair and green eyes.
2) Put in order: (red / a / small / ball) → … (young / a / friendly / man) → …
3) Describe your best friend in 3 sentences.
