There is / There are
We use “there is” and “there are” to say that something exists or doesn’t exist.
There is (singular / uncountable)
“There is a book on the table.”
“There is some milk in the fridge.”
Negative: “There isn’t any sugar.”
There are (plural)
“There are three chairs in the room.”
“There are many students in the class.”
Negative: “There aren’t any pencils.”
Questions
“Is there a hospital near here?” → Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.
“Are there any shops?” → Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.
Using “some” and “any”
- Some: affirmative sentences. “There are some apples.”
- Any: negative and questions. “There aren’t any chairs.” “Are there any books?”
