Present Continuous Tense: Uses and Forms
Uses
- Actions happening now: “She is reading a book right now.”
- Temporary situations: “He is staying with his uncle this week.”
- Planned future: “We are going to the cinema tomorrow.”
Forms
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Spelling rules for -ing
- Most verbs: add -ing: play → playing, read → reading
- Verbs ending in -e: drop -e, add -ing: make → making, write → writing
- One syllable verb (CVC): double last consonant + ing: sit → sitting, run → running
- Verbs ending in -ie: change -ie to -y + ing: lie → lying, die → dying
Negative form
Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing
“I am not working.” “She is not sleeping.” “They are not playing.”
Difference Present Simple vs Continuous
Present Simple: habits, general truths. “I play tennis every Sunday.”
Present Continuous: now, temporary. “I am playing tennis now.”
Exercises
