Used To for Past Habits
Introduction
We use “used to” to talk about past habits or states that are no longer true.
Formation
Subject + used to + base verb
Ex: I used to play football every weekend. (but I don’t now)
Negative: Subject + didn’t use to + base verb
Ex: She didn’t use to like coffee.
Questions: Did + subject + use to + base verb?
Ex: Did you use to live in Algiers?
Examples
1. My grandfather used to tell us stories.
2. We used to live in a small house.
3. I didn’t use to wake up early.
4. Did you use to have a pet?
Exercises
1. Complete: I ___ (play) with dolls when I was young.
2. Make negative: He used to smoke. → ___
3. Ask a question: you / go to that school? → ___
