Past Continuous vs Past Simple
Introduction
The Past Continuous (was/were + -ing) describes an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past. The Past Simple describes a completed action. These two tenses often combine: Past Continuous sets the scene (long action), Past Simple interrupts it (short action).

- Usage: Action in progress at a specific past time. “At 8pm last night, I was doing my homework”
- Two simultaneous long actions: “While I was studying, my brother was watching TV”
Past Simple vs Past Continuous
- Long action (Past Continuous) interrupted by short action (Past Simple): “I was sleeping when the phone rang”
- “She was walking home when it started to rain”
- “While I was having dinner, someone knocked at the door”
