Modal Verbs: Can, Could, May, Might, Should

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express ability, permission, possibility, obligation, or advice.

Can / Could

Can: ability (I can swim), permission (Can I go out?).
Could: past ability (I could run fast when I was young), polite request (Could you help me?).

May / Might

May: formal permission (May I come in?), possibility (It may rain).
Might: less certain possibility (I might go to the party).

Should

Advice or obligation: You should study for the exam. We should respect our parents.

Must / Have to

Necessity or strong obligation: I must finish my homework. You have to wear a seatbelt.

Exercises

Complete: I … swim when I was 5 (past ability). You … study hard (advice). … I use your phone (permission). It … rain tonight (possibility).
