How to Write a Narrative Essay

A narrative essay tells a story from the writer’s personal experience. It should engage the reader and convey a meaningful lesson or insight.

1. Structure of a Narrative Essay

a) Introduction

1. Hook : Start with an interesting sentence to grab the reader’s attention. Use dialogue, a question, or a vivid description.
2. Setting the scene : Where and when did the story happen? Who was involved?
3. Thesis : What is the main point or lesson of your story?

b) Body Paragraphs

Tell the story in chronological order. Each paragraph should describe a part of the story.

• Use descriptive language : adjectives, adverbs, sensory details (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste)
• Use time connectors : first, then, next, after that, finally, suddenly, meanwhile, later
• Include dialogue : what people said during the story
• Show emotions : how did you feel? excited, scared, happy, nervous

c) Conclusion

1. Reflection : What did you learn from this experience?
2. Final thought : How did this story change you?

2. Useful Vocabulary for Narrative Writing

• Time words : once upon a time, one day, at first, meanwhile, eventually, in the end
• Emotion words : excited, terrified, amazed, disappointed, relieved, grateful
• Descriptive words : beautiful, enormous, dark, bright, silent, noisy, crowded

3. Exercises

Exercise : Write a short narrative (150 words) about “A memorable day in your life”. Include :

1. An engaging introduction
2. Descriptive details (where, when, who)
3. What happened (in chronological order)
4. What you learned from this experience
