Expressing Likes and Dislikes: Grammar and Speaking
Expressing what we like and don’t like is essential for communication. In this lesson, we learn how to express likes and dislikes in English.
1. Verbs for Likes and Dislikes
- Like: like, love, enjoy, adore, be fond of, be interested in
- Dislike: dislike, hate, can’t stand, don’t like, detest
2. Grammar Structure
Like/Dislike + noun: “I like football.” “I hate spiders.”
Like/Dislike + verb-ing: “I like reading books.” “She hates getting up early.”
Like/Dislike + to + verb: “I like to swim in summer.”
3. Asking About Likes
- What do you like? I like music and sports.
- Do you like reading? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
- What kind of food do you like? I like pizza and pasta.
4. Expressing Preferences
- I prefer tea to coffee.
- I like football more than basketball.
- My favourite colour is blue.
5. Example Dialogue
A: “What do you like doing in your free time?”
B: “I like reading books and playing football. What about you?”
A: “I enjoy watching films and listening to music.”
