Modal Verbs: Can, Could, Must, Should
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express ability, permission, obligation, or advice.
1. Can / Could (Ability)
- Can: present ability. “I can swim.” (I know how to swim)
- Could: past ability. “I could run fast when I was young.”
- Negative: cannot (can’t), could not (couldn’t).
2. Can / Could (Permission)
- “Can I open the window?” (informal)
- “Could I ask a question?” (more polite)
3. Must (Obligation)
- “You must wear a uniform at school.” (necessary)
- “You mustn’t run in the corridor.” (prohibition)
4. Should (Advice)
- “You should study for the exam.” (recommendation)
- “You shouldn’t eat too much sugar.” (advice against)
