Future Tenses: Will and Going to
1. Will (Predictions & Spontaneous Decisions)
Subject + will + base verb
- Predictions: “I think it will rain tomorrow.”
- Spontaneous decisions: (deciding now) “I’m thirsty. I ‘ll get a glass of water.”
- Promises: “I will help you with your homework.”
- Offers: “I ‘ll carry your bag for you.”
Negative: will not (won’t). “I won’t be late.”
2. Going to (Plans & Evidence)
Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb
- Plans and intentions: “I am going to study medicine.” (already decided)
- Evidence: “Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.”
Difference
Will: decided at the moment of speaking. “The phone is ringing. I’ll answer it.”
Going to: already planned. “I’m going to visit my grandmother this weekend.”
Exercises
1) Complete with will or going to: I think it … be sunny tomorrow. We … visit Paris next summer (plan).
2) Choose: A: “I’m cold.” B: “I (will/am going to) close the window.”
