The Passive Voice: Formation and Uses
In the passive voice, the subject receives the action instead of doing it.
Formation
Subject + be (in the right tense) + past participle + (by + agent)

| Present simple | People grow coffee. | Coffee is grown. |
| Past simple | Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. | Hamlet was written by Shakespeare. |
| Future will | They will finish the project. | The project will be finished. |
| Present perfect | Someone has stolen my bag. | My bag has been stolen. |
When to use the passive?
- When the agent is unknown: “My car was stolen.”
- When the agent is obvious: “He was arrested.” (by the police)
- In formal/written English: “The meeting was postponed.”
- To focus on the action, not the doer.
