Comparatives and Superlatives: Rules
1. Comparatives
We use comparatives to compare two people or things.
| Adjective | Comparative | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| tall | taller than | short adj. + -er |
| big | bigger than | CVC: double last letter |
| happy | happier than | -y → -ier |
| beautiful | more beautiful than | long adj.: more + adj |
| good | better than | irregular |
| bad | worse than | irregular |
Examples: “Ahmed is taller than Karim.” “This book is more interesting than that one.”
2. Superlatives
We use superlatives to compare three or more things.

| happy | the happiest |
| beautiful | the most beautiful |
| good | the best |
| bad | the worst |
Example: “Mount Everest is the highest mountain.” “She is the best student in the class.”
