Reported Speech: Statements, Questions and Commands
Reported speech (also called indirect speech) is used to report what someone else said without quoting their exact words.
Rules for Reported Speech
Tense Changes
- Present Simple → Past Simple (“I like coffee” → He said he liked coffee.)
- Present Continuous → Past Continuous (“I am reading” → She said she was reading.)
- Past Simple → Past Perfect (“I saw her” → He said he had seen her.)
- Present Perfect → Past Perfect (“I have finished” → She said she had finished.)
- Will → Would (“I will come” → He said he would come.)
- Can → Could (“I can swim” → She said she could swim.)
Time and Place Changes
- Now → then
- Today → that day
- Tomorrow → the next day
- Yesterday → the day before
- Here → there
- This → that
Reporting Questions
When reporting questions, word order changes to subject + verb (not question order).
- Wh-questions: “Where do you live?” → He asked me where I lived.
- Yes/No questions: “Do you like tea?” → She asked me if I liked tea.
Reporting Commands
Use tell + to + infinitive or ask + to + infinitive.
- “Sit down!” → He told me to sit down.
- “Please help me.” → She asked me to help her.
