Making Polite Requests: Can, Could, Will, Would, May
In English, it is important to be polite when making requests. The choice of modal verb depends on how formal or polite you want to be.
Can (Informal)
Can is the most common and informal way to make a request. Use it with friends and family.
- Can you help me with this bag?
- Can I borrow your pen?
- Can you open the window, please?
Could (More Polite)
Could is more polite than can and is used in both formal and informal situations.
- Could you please tell me the time?
- Could I use your phone?
- Could you pass me the salt?
Will (Informal/Neutral)
Will is used for requests in neutral or informal contexts.
- Will you close the door?
- Will you help me carry this?
Would (Very Polite)
Would is more polite and is often used in formal situations.
- Would you mind closing the window?
- Would you like some tea?
- Would you please send me the document?
May (Formal)
May is the most formal way to make a request, often used in official or very polite contexts.
- May I come in?
- May I ask you a question?
- May I leave early today?
Responding to Requests
- Yes: Sure / Of course / Certainly / Yes, please
- No (polite): Im sorry, but… / Im afraid I cant / Not right now
