Describing Places: There is/There are, Prepositions, Adjectives
Describing places is an important skill in English. To describe a place effectively, you need to use there is/there are, prepositions of place, and descriptive adjectives.
Using There is / There are
Use there is (singular) and there are (plural) to talk about what exists in a place.
- There is a park near my house.
- There are two supermarkets in the neighbourhood.
- There isnt a hospital nearby.
- Are there any restaurants here?
Prepositions of Place
- In: The book is in my bag.
- On: The cat is on the table.
- Under: The dog is under the bed.
- Next to / Beside: The school is next to the mosque.
- Between: The pharmacy is between the bakery and the bank.
- Behind: The garden is behind the house.
- In front of: The car is in front of the building.
- Opposite: The café is opposite the library.
Descriptive Adjectives
Use adjectives to make your description vivid:
- Size: big, small, large, tiny, huge
- Age: old, new, modern, ancient
- Condition: clean, dirty, beautiful, ugly, quiet, noisy
- Colour: white, blue, green, colourful
Example Description
“My neighbourhood is very peaceful. There is a small park with many green trees. There are also some shops near my house. The mosque is next to the school and opposite the library. It is a beautiful place to live.”
