Giving Advice: Should, Ought to, Had Better
In English, there are several ways to give advice, suggestions, and recommendations. The most common modal verbs used for giving advice are should, ought to, and had better.
Should / Shouldnt
Should is the most common way to give advice. It means “it is a good idea to…”
- You should eat more vegetables.
- He should study for the exam.
- You shouldnt stay up late.
- She shouldnt eat too much sugar.
Ought to / Ought not to
Ought to has a similar meaning to should but is slightly more formal and less common in spoken English.
- You ought to see a doctor.
- They ought to apologize for their mistake.
- You ought not to speak so loudly.
Had Better / Had Better Not
Had better is stronger than should and is used for specific situations where there may be negative consequences.
- You had better take an umbrella. (It might rain.)
- We had better hurry or we will miss the bus.
- You had better not tell anyone.
