Time Clauses with When, While, Before, After, As Soon As
Time clauses are used to show the relationship between two events in time. They are introduced by time conjunctions such as when, while, before, after, as soon as, until, and since.
Rules for Time Clauses
The main rule to remember: In time clauses, we use the present simple tense for future meaning. We do NOT use will or going to in a time clause.
When
Used for two actions happening at the same time or one after another.
- When I arrive home, I will call you.
- When it rains, the ground gets wet.
While
Used for two continuous actions happening simultaneously.
- While I was studying, my mother was cooking.
- While you wait, please have a seat.
Before and After
Show the order of events.
- Before you leave, close the windows.
- After she finishes her homework, she will watch TV.
As Soon As
Indicates immediate sequence.
- As soon as the teacher arrives, the lesson begins.
- I will call you as soon as I get home.
