Expressing Certainty and Uncertainty: Must, Cant, May, Might, Could
Modal verbs are used in English to express how sure we are about something. They help us show certainty (we are sure) or uncertainty (we are not sure) about a situation.
Expressing Certainty
Must (Very sure something is true)
We use must when we are almost 100% sure something is true based on evidence.
- He must be tired. He has been working all day.
- She must be at home. Her car is in the driveway.
Cant (Very sure something is not true)
We use cant when we are almost 100% sure something is impossible.
- He cant be serious. He is joking.
- She cant have finished already. She just started.
Expressing Uncertainty
May / Might / Could (Possibility)
We use these modals when we are not sure. May is more formal, might suggests less certainty, and could is commonly used in spoken English.
- It may rain later. Take an umbrella.
- She might come to the party, but she is not sure.
- He could be at the library. I am not sure.
Degrees of Certainty
- 100% sure: is / is not
- 95% sure: must / cant
- 50% sure: may / might / could
- Less than 50%: might not / may not
