Conditionals Summary: Zero, First, Second, Third Conditionals
Conditional sentences are used to express that one action depends on another. There are four main types of conditionals in English.
Zero Conditional — General Truths
If + Present Simple → Present Simple
Used for facts and general truths.
- If you heat ice, it melts.
- If it rains, the ground gets wet.
First Conditional — Real Possibilities
If + Present Simple → Will + Verb
Used for possible future situations.
- If I study hard, I will pass the exam.
- If she arrives early, we will see her.
Second Conditional — Unreal Present
If + Past Simple → Would + Verb
Used for hypothetical or unlikely situations in the present or future.
- If I had a million dollars, I would travel the world.
- If she were taller, she could play basketball.
Third Conditional — Past Regrets
If + Past Perfect → Would Have + Past Participle
Used for unreal situations in the past (impossible to change).
- If I had studied, I would have passed the exam.
- If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train.
Mixed Conditionals
Sometimes we mix the second and third conditionals: If I had studied (past), I would be rich now (present).
