Present Perfect Continuous: Formation, Use and Signal Words
The Present Perfect Continuous (also called Present Perfect Progressive) is used to talk about actions that started in the past and have continued up to the present, with emphasis on the duration or ongoing nature of the action.
Formation
Subject + Have/Has + Been + Verb-ing
- Affirmative: I have been studying for two hours.
- Negative: She has not (hasnt) been feeling well recently.
- Interrogative: Have you been waiting long?
Uses
1. Actions that started in the past and continue to the present
Emphasises the duration. Example: They have been living in Algiers since 2020.
2. Actions that have recently stopped with visible results
Example: Your eyes are red. Have you been crying?
3. Temporary situations that started in the past
Example: I have been working on this project recently.
Signal Words
- For + duration (for two hours, for a week)
- Since + starting point (since Monday, since 2023)
- Recently / Lately
- All day / all morning / all week
Present Perfect Simple vs Continuous
- Simple: I have read the book. (completed action)
- Continuous: I have been reading the book. (action in progress)
