📝 I. Introduction

In English, nouns are divided into two main categories: countable nouns (noms dénombrables) which can be counted (one book, two books) and uncountable nouns (noms indénombrables) which cannot be counted (water, information). This distinction affects article usage, verb agreement, and quantifier choice.

  • Have plural forms (usually +s/es): book/books, box/boxes, city/cities
  • Can use a/an in singular: a cat, an elephant
  • Irregular plurals: child/children, foot/feet, tooth/teeth, man/men, mouse/mice, sheep/sheep

Examples: chair, table, pen, computer, student, city, apple, dollar, minute, person

📋 III. Uncountable Nouns

Rules:

  • Cannot be used with numbers directly (NOT two waters)
  • Always take singular verb form: Water is essential. The news is good.
  • Cannot use a/an: NOT a water, NOT an information
  • Use quantifiers or unit words to express quantity: a glass of water, a piece of information
