- Differentiate between active and passive causative structures
- Use causative verbs correctly in Bac exam tasks (writing, error correction, transformation)
- Apply causative patterns in real-life contexts
📝 I. Introduction
Causative verbs express the idea that someone causes something to happen by hiring, asking, or persuading another person to do it. Instead of doing the action ourselves, we cause someone else (usually a professional or expert) to do it for us. The two most common causative verbs are have and get in the structure have/get something done.
📚 II. The Passive Causative: Have/Get Something Done
1. Structure
| Subject | Causative Verb | Object (thing) | Past Participle | Object (person – optional) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | had / got | my car | repaired | by the mechanic |
| She | is having | her hair | cut | at the salon |
| They | will have | their house | painted | next week |
2. Have vs Get
- Have something done: More formal, implies arranging for a service. I had my car serviced yesterday.
- Get something done: More informal, often implies persuading or managing to have something done. I finally got my phone fixed.
3. Tenses of Have/Get Something Done
- Present Simple: I have my teeth checked every six months.
- Past Simple: She had her dress made for the party.
- Future (will): They will have their garden landscaped next spring.
- Present Continuous: He is having his apartment renovated right now.
- Present Perfect: We have had our windows replaced.
- Modal verbs: You should have your eyes tested regularly.
• I cut my hair myself. (I did it) vs I had my hair cut. (The hairdresser did it)
• She painted her room. (She did it herself) vs She got her room painted. (Someone else painted it)
• We are installing solar panels. (We are doing it) vs We are having solar panels installed. (Professionals are doing it)
📋 III. Active Causative: Have/Get/Make Someone Do Something
| Verb | Structure | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Have | have + person + base verb | Ask, instruct, arrange | I had the assistant check the documents. |
| Get | get + person + to + verb | Persuade, convince | I got my brother to help me with the project. |
| Make | make + person + base verb | Force, compel | The teacher made the students rewrite the essay. |
| Let | let + person + base verb | Allow, permit | My parents let me borrow the car. |
