Expressing Concession and Contrast: Although, Despite, In spite of

Expressing concession and contrast is important for writing complex sentences and arguments in the BAC exam.

Although / Even though + clause:

Although and even though are conjunctions that introduce a subordinate clause expressing contrast. Even though is stronger than although.

Exemple: “Although it rained, we enjoyed the picnic.” / “Even though he was tired, he continued working.”

Despite / In spite of + noun/gerund:

Despite and in spite of are prepositions followed by a noun, pronoun, or gerund (-ing form).

Exemple: “Despite the rain, we enjoyed the picnic.” / “In spite of being tired, he continued working.” / “Despite his illness, he attended the meeting.”

However / Nevertheless + clause:

These are adverbial connectors used at the beginning of a sentence or clause to show contrast.

Exemple: “The weather was bad. However, we went out anyway.” / “He was busy. Nevertheless, he helped me.”

Whereas / While + clause:

Used to show direct contrast between two things.

Exemple: “Whereas some people prefer summer, others prefer winter.” / “While the north is cold, the south is warm.”

BAC Example 2023:

“Rewrite: ‘He was sick, but he went to school.’ (Using Despite) → ‘Despite being sick, he went to school.'”
