Prefixes and Suffixes: Word Formation
Understanding prefixes and suffixes helps you understand new words and expand your vocabulary. Word formation is a common topic in the BAC exam.
Common Prefixes:
- un- (not): unhappy, unable, unclear, unforgettable.
- in-/im-/il-/ir- (not): incorrect, impossible, illegal, irregular.
- dis- (not, opposite): disagree, disappear, disconnect.
- re- (again): rewrite, rebuild, reconsider, redo.
- pre- (before): preview, prehistory, preoccupy.
- mis- (wrongly): misunderstand, mislead, misspell.
- over- (too much): overwork, overeat, oversleep.
- under- (too little): undercook, underpaid, underestimate.
- inter- (between): international, interconnect, interfaith.
- anti- (against): anti-government, anti-war, antisocial.
Common Suffixes:
- -tion/-sion (noun): education, information, decision, discussion.

- -ly (adverb): quickly, carefully, easily.
- -ize/-ise (verb): organize, modernize, criticize.
