Prepositions of Time: In, On, At
Prepositions of time are essential in English grammar. They help us express when something happens. The three most common prepositions of time are in, on, and at.
AT — Specific Times
Use at for precise times, clock times, and specific points in the day.
- At 5 oclock / at midnight / at noon
- At bedtime / at sunrise / at the moment
- At night (exception)
ON — Days and Dates
Use on for days of the week, dates, and specific days.
- On Monday / on Friday
- On July 4th / on my birthday
- On the weekend (American English) / On Christmas day
IN — Longer Periods
Use in for months, years, seasons, centuries, and longer periods.
- In January / in 2025 / in summer
- In the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening
- In the 21st century / in the past
