Gerunds and infinitives are verb forms that function as nouns. A gerund ends in -ing, while an infinitive is to + base verb. This lesson covers their forms, uses, and the verbs that can be followed by each.
The Gerund (Verb + -ing)
A gerund is used as a noun. It can be a subject, object, or complement. Examples: “Swimming is good exercise.” (subject) / “I enjoy reading.” (object)
The Infinitive (To + Verb)
An infinitive can also function as a noun, adjective, or adverb. Examples: “To learn is important.” (subject) / “I want to travel.” (object)
Verbs followed by Gerund
Common verbs: enjoy, avoid, consider, suggest, finish, practice, mind, admit, deny, imagine, keep.
“I avoid eating junk food.” / “She suggested going to the cinema.”
Verbs followed by Infinitive
Common verbs: want, need, decide, hope, plan, promise, refuse, seem, agree, learn, expect.
“I want to learn English.” / “They decided to start a business.”
Verbs followed by Gerund OR Infinitive (with different meaning)
- Stop + gerund (quit doing something): “I stopped smoking.” vs Stop + infinitive (pause to do something): “I stopped to smoke.”
- Remember + gerund (recall past): “I remember meeting him.” vs Remember + infinitive (not forget): “Remember to call me.”
- Try + gerund (experiment): “Try pressing that button.” vs Try + infinitive (attempt): “Try to solve this problem.”
Common Expressions with Gerunds and Infinitives
Gerund after prepositions: “interested in reading“, “good at playing“. Infinitive after adjectives: “happy to help“, “difficult to understand“.

- Explain the difference: “I stopped to eat” vs “I stopped eating.”
