Word Formation: Prefixes and Suffixes

Prefixes: un- (unhappy), im-/in-/il-/ir- (impossible, incorrect, illegal, irregular), dis- (disagree), mis- (misunderstand), re- (rewrite), pre- (preview), over- (overcook), under- (underestimate). Negative prefixes: un, im, in, il, ir, dis, non, a. Suffixes: Noun suffixes: -tion/-sion (education, decision), -ment (development), -ness (happiness), -ity (activity), -er/-or (teacher, actor). Adjective suffixes: -ful (beautiful), -less (careless), -able (comfortable), -ive (creative), -al (national), -ous (dangerous). Verb suffixes: -ize/-ise (organize), -en (widen), -ify (simplify). Examples: happy -> unhappy -> happiness, care -> careful -> careless, create -> creative -> creativity. Exercise: Form new words from: agree, appear, possible, help, beauty.
