There are several ways to talk about the future in English. This lesson covers the main future forms: will, going to, and present continuous for future arrangements.
Will + Base Verb
Uses: (1) Predictions about the future: “It will rain tomorrow.” (2) Spontaneous decisions: “I’ll help you with that!” (3) Promises and offers: “I will always love you.” (4) Facts: “The sun will rise at 6 am.”
Be Going To + Base Verb
Uses: (1) Plans and intentions: “I am going to study medicine.” (2) Predictions based on evidence: “Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.” (3) Decisions already made: “They are going to get married next year.”
Present Continuous for Future
Uses: Fixed arrangements and appointments. Usually with a time expression. “I am meeting my friend tomorrow evening.” “We are flying to Paris next week.” This form is used for arrangements that have already been confirmed.
Differences
- Will: spontaneous, predictions, promises. “I will answer the phone!”
- Going to: plans, intentions, evidence-based predictions. “I am going to buy a car.”
- Present Continuous: fixed arrangements. “I am seeing the doctor at 3 pm.”
Time Expressions for Future
tomorrow, next week/month/year, in two days, soon, later, tonight, this weekend, in the future.
