Structure of a Descriptive Essay

Introduction: Introduce the subject and your overall impression.
Body paragraphs: Describe different aspects using sensory details (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste).
Conclusion: Summarize the overall impression and significance.

Sensory Details

Sight: colors, shapes, sizes, movements. “The golden sunset painted the sky with shades of orange and pink.”
Sound: loud, soft, rhythmic. “The waves crashed against the shore with a soothing rhythm.”
Smell: fragrant, fresh, musty. “The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the room.”
Touch: smooth, rough, warm, cold. “The old wooden bench felt rough under my fingers.”
Taste: sweet, sour, bitter, salty. “The lemonade was refreshingly sour and sweet.”

Describing a Person

Physical appearance: height, build, hair, eyes, face, clothes.
Personality: kind, funny, serious, energetic, calm.
Actions and habits: how they walk, talk, smile.
Example: “My grandmother has kind eyes that crinkle when she smiles. Her silver hair is always neatly braided.”

Describing a Place

Location and setting: Where is it? What surrounds it?
Atmosphere: peaceful, busy, mysterious, cheerful.
Details: buildings, nature, people, sounds, smells.

Useful Language

Adjectives: magnificent, serene, bustling, ancient, modern, cozy, vibrant.
Similes: “as white as snow”, “like a jewel”.
Metaphors: “the city was a beehive of activity”.
