Gerunds and Infinitives

Understanding when to use the gerund (verb-ing) or infinitive (to + verb) is an important aspect of English grammar.

Verbs followed by Gerund (-ing)

• enjoy: I enjoy reading books.
• mind: Do you mind waiting?
• suggest: He suggested going to the cinema.
• avoid: She avoids eating junk food.
• finish: I finished doing my homework.
• admit: He admitted stealing the money.
• can’t help: I can’t help laughing.

Verbs followed by Infinitive (to + verb)

• want: I want to learn English.
• hope: She hopes to pass the exam.
• decide: They decided to travel.
• promise: He promised to help me.
• agree: We agreed to meet at 5 PM.
• learn: I learned to play the guitar.
• need: You need to study more.

Verbs followed by Both (with meaning change)

• stop: I stopped smoking (quit) / I stopped to smoke (paused)
• remember: I remember locking the door (memory) / Remember to lock the door (don’t forget)
• try: I tried opening the window (experiment) / I tried to open the window (attempt)

Choose the correct form: 1. I enjoy (to swim/swimming) in the sea. 2. She decided (to study/studying) medicine. 3. He stopped (to smoke/smoking) last year. 4. Please remember (to bring/bringing) your passport.
