Lesson: Present Continuous Tense
The present continuous tense is used to describe actions happening right now or around the present time.
1. When do we use Present Continuous?
- Actions happening now: I am reading a book right now.
- Temporary situations: She is staying with her aunt this week.
- Future arrangements: We are meeting tomorrow at 5 pm.
2. Formation
Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
Affirmative:
- I am playing football.
- He/She/It is playing football.
- You/We/They are playing football.
Negative:
- I am not (I’m not) playing football.
- He is not (isn’t) playing football.
- They are not (aren’t) playing football.
Interrogative:
- Am I playing?
- Is he playing?
- Are they playing?
3. Spelling of -ing form
- Most verbs: add -ing (play → playing, read → reading)
- Verbs ending in -e: remove -e + ing (write → writing, make → making)
- Short verbs (CVC): double last consonant + ing (run → running, swim → swimming)
Exercises
Exercise 1: Complete with present continuous.
- She (read) …… a book now.
- They (play) …… football in the garden.
- I (study) …… English at the moment.
Exercise 2: Make negative sentences.
- He is sleeping. → He …… sleeping.
- We are eating. → We …… eating.
