Lesson: Past Simple Tense

The past simple tense is used to describe completed actions in the past.

1. When do we use Past Simple?

• Finished actions: I visited my grandmother yesterday.
• Past states: She was very kind.
• Sequence of past actions: He entered the room, sat down, and started reading.

2. Formation

Regular verbs: add -ed

• play → played, walk → walked, work → worked

Spelling rules for regular verbs:

• Verbs ending in -e: add -d (live → lived)
• Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to i + ed (study → studied)
• Short verbs (CVC): double last consonant + ed (stop → stopped)

Irregular verbs:

• go → went, eat → ate, see → saw, buy → bought, write → wrote

Negative and Question:

• Negative: I did not (didn’t) play tennis.
• Question: Did you play tennis?

Exercise 2: Complete the sentences with past simple.
