Lesson: Present Simple Tense
The present simple tense is used to express habits, general truths, and repeated actions.
1. When do we use Present Simple?
- Habits: I play football every Friday.
- General truths: The sun rises in the east.
- Schedules: The bus leaves at 8 am.
2. Formation
Affirmative:
- I/You/We/They play tennis.
- He/She/It plays tennis. (add -s or -es)
Negative:
- I/You/We/They do not (don’t) play tennis.
- He/She/It does not (doesn’t) play tennis.
Interrogative:
- Do I/you/we/they play tennis?
- Does he/she/it play tennis?
3. Spelling rules for 3rd person singular
- Generally add -s: play → plays, eat → eats
- Verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o add -es: go → goes, watch → watches
- Verbs ending in consonant + y change y to i and add -es: study → studies, fly → flies
Exercises
Exercise 1: Put the verbs in the correct form.
- She (drink) …… coffee every morning.
- They (go) …… to school by bus.
- He (study) …… English on Mondays.
Exercise 2: Make negative sentences.
- I like fish. → I …… fish.
- He plays tennis. → He …… tennis.
