Lesson: Verb to Be (Present and Past)
The verb “to be” is one of the most important verbs in English. It is used to describe states, identities, and characteristics.
1. Present Simple of “To Be”
The verb “to be” in the present simple has three forms: am, is, are.
- I am a student.
- You are my friend.
- He/She/It is a teacher.
- We are in the classroom.
- They are from Algeria.
Negative form:
- I am not tired.
- He is not (isn’t) at home.
- They are not (aren’t) happy.
Question form:
- Am I late?
- Is she a doctor?
- Are you ready?
2. Past Simple of “To Be”
The verb “to be” in the past simple has two forms: was and were.
- I/He/She/It was at school yesterday.
- You/We/They were at home last night.
Negative form:
- I was not (wasn’t) late.
- They were not (weren’t) happy.
