Countable and Uncountable Nouns
Nouns in English can be countable (can be counted: one apple, two apples) or uncountable (cannot be counted: water, rice, information). This distinction affects the use of articles, quantifiers, and verbs. Some nouns can be both countable and uncountable with different meanings.
Countable Nouns
- Have singular and plural forms: book → books, child → children, city → cities.
- Use a/an in singular: a book, an apple.
- Use many, few, a few, a number of: many books, a few students.
- Use plural verb: “The books are on the table.”
Uncountable Nouns
- No plural form: water (not waters), information (not informations).
- Cannot use a/an directly: a water (incorrect) → a glass of water (correct).
- Use much, little, a little, a lot of: much water, a little sugar.
- Use singular verb: “Water is essential for life.”
- Common uncountable nouns: water, milk, rice, bread, sugar, salt, air, weather, information, news, advice, homework, furniture, money, music, travel, work, time.

Nouns that can be both
- “I’d like a coffee.” (countable = a cup of coffee)
- “Coffee is my favorite drink.” (uncountable = the substance)
- “She has beautiful hair.” (uncountable) / “There is a hair in my soup.” (countable = one strand)
