Lesson 1: Present Simple Tense

The Present Simple tense is one of the most important tenses in English. It is used to describe habits, routines, general truths, and permanent situations.

When to use the Present Simple

• Habits and routines: I get up at 7 o clock every day. / She brushes her teeth after breakfast.
• General truths: The sun rises in the east. / Water freezes at 0°C.
• Permanent situations: They live in Algiers. / He works as a teacher.

Formation

Affirmative form

Subject	Verb	Example
I / You / We / They	base form	I play football.
He / She / It	base form + s/es	He plays football.

Negative form

• I/You/We/They + don t + verb: I don t play tennis.
• He/She/It + doesn t + verb: She doesn t like coffee.

Interrogative form

• Do + I/you/we/they + verb: Do you speak English?
• Does + he/she/it + verb: Does she study hard?

Spelling rules for he/she/it (third person singular)

• Generally add -s: play → plays, read → reads
• Verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o add -es: watch → watches, go → goes
• Verbs ending in consonant + y change y to i and add -es: study → studies, fly → flies
