Grammar: Conjunctions (and, but, or, so, because)

Conjunctions are words that connect words, phrases, or sentences. They help us make our speech and writing more fluent and logical. The most common conjunctions in English are: and, but, or, so, and because. Each has a specific use and meaning.

1. And (و) – Addition

We use “and” to add similar ideas or items together.

• I like apples and oranges. (connecting words)
• She is smart and beautiful. (connecting adjectives)
• He woke up, brushed his teeth, and had breakfast. (connecting actions)
• I went to the market, and I bought some vegetables. (connecting sentences)

2. But (لكن) – Contrast

We use “but” to show a contrast or opposite idea.

• I like football, but my brother likes basketball.
• She is tired, but she keeps working.
• This phone is cheap but good.
• He studied hard, but he didn’t pass the exam.

3. Or (أو) – Choice/Alternative

We use “or” to show a choice or alternative.

• Would you like tea or coffee?
• You can take the bus or walk to school.
• Hurry up, or you will be late!
• Is she a teacher or a student?

4. So (لذلك) – Result

We use “so” to show the result or consequence of something.

• It was raining, so I took my umbrella.
• She was sick, so she stayed at home.
• He studied hard, so he passed the exam.
• I was hungry, so I made a sandwich.

5. Because (لأن) – Reason

We use “because” to give a reason for something.

• I am happy because I got a new bike.
• She didn’t come to school because she was ill.
• He passed the exam because he worked hard.
• We stayed inside because it was very cold.
