Present Perfect vs Past Simple

Two important tenses for talking about past actions in English.

Past Simple

For finished actions at a specific time. Form: V-ed (regular) / V2 (irregular). Example: “I visited Paris last year.” “She saw him yesterday.”

Present Perfect

For past actions connected to the present. Form: have/has + V-ed. Example: “I have visited Paris twice.” “She has lived here since 2010.”

Key differences

Past Simple uses specific time references (yesterday, last week, in 2010, ago). Present Perfect uses unspecific time (ever, never, just, already, yet, since, for).

Exercises

1. Choose: “I ___ (visit) my grandmother yesterday.” “She ___ (live) here since 2015.”

2. Write 6 sentences: 3 with Past Simple, 3 with Present Perfect.
