Writing a Cause-Effect Essay
Introduction
A cause-effect essay explains why something happens (causes) and what happens as a result (effects). This type of essay is common in academic writing and helps develop analytical thinking. It examines the relationships between events, actions, and outcomes.
Structure
- Introduction: Hook, background information, thesis statement (mentioning causes or effects).
- Body Paragraphs: Can be organized by causes (paragraphs about different causes) or by effects (paragraphs about different effects). Each paragraph should have a clear topic sentence and supporting evidence.
- Conclusion: Summary of main points, restatement of thesis, final thought or call to action.
Useful Language
- Expressing causes: because, since, as, due to, owing to, the reason for, is caused by.
- Expressing effects: therefore, consequently, as a result, thus, hence, leads to, results in, contributes to.
- Transition words: one cause/effect is, another cause/effect is, moreover, furthermore, in addition.

Causes: Easy access to technology, need for social connection, peer pressure
Effects: Improved communication skills, addiction and reduced productivity, mental health issues
