Learning Objective
Learn how to describe people’s appearance and personality using adjectives.
Introduction
In English, we use adjectives to describe people. Adjectives describe nouns (people, places, things). There are two main types of adjectives for describing people: appearance adjectives (describing how someone looks) and personality adjectives (describing someone’s character).
Adjectives for Physical Appearance
- Height: tall, short, medium-height
- Build: thin, slim, fat, well-built, athletic
- Hair: long, short, curly, straight, wavy, blonde, brown, black, red, grey
- Eyes: blue, brown, green, black, big, small
- Age: young, old, middle-aged, teenage
- General look: beautiful, handsome, pretty, good-looking, ugly
Adjectives for Personality
- Positive: kind, friendly, generous, funny, intelligent, brave, honest, polite, helpful
- Negative: lazy, rude, selfish, dishonest, mean, unfriendly
Grammar Rules
In English, adjectives come before the noun:
She is a tall girl. (NOT: She is a girl tall)
We also use adjectives after the verb “to be” (am, is, are):
He is friendly.
They are intelligent.
To make a negative sentence, use “not”:
She is not (isn’t) tall.
Examples
My best friend Ahmed is tall and thin. He has short, black hair and brown eyes. He is very funny and kind. Everyone likes him.
