Learning Objective
Learn to talk about daily routines using the Present Simple tense.
Introduction
We use the present simple tense to talk about habits and routines — things we do every day, every week, or regularly.
Formation
Affirmative sentences:
- I / You / We / They + base verb: I wake up at 7 am.
- He / She / It + verb + (e)s: He wakes up at 7 am.
Spelling rules for he/she/it:
- Most verbs: add -s: eat → eats, play → plays
- Verbs ending in -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o: add -es: go → goes, watch → watches, finish → finishes
- Verbs ending in consonant + -y: change y to -ies: study → studies, fly → flies
Negative sentences:
Use do not (don’t) or does not (doesn’t) + base verb:
I don’t play football in the morning.
She doesn’t eat meat.
Questions:
Use Do/Does + subject + base verb:
Do you like school? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
Does he wake up early? Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.
