Writing an Argumentative Essay
Introduction
An argumentative essay requires the writer to take a position on a controversial issue and support it with evidence and reasoning. The goal is to convince the reader to agree with your point of view. This type of essay is common in academic writing and exams.
Structure
- Introduction: Hook (attention grabber), background information, thesis statement (your position).
- Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph presents one argument supporting your thesis. Use the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Counterarguments: address opposing views and refute them.
- Conclusion: Restate thesis, summarize main arguments, call to action or final thought.
Useful Language
- Introducing arguments: “Firstly/First of all…”, “Another key argument is…”
- Adding evidence: “For example…”, “According to…”, “Studies show that…”
- Counterarguments: “Some people argue that…”, “However, this view ignores…”
- Concluding: “In conclusion…”, “To sum up…”, “Therefore…”
