Introduction
The Olympic Games are the world's most important sporting event. They bring together athletes from around the world to compete in various sports. The Olympics have a rich history dating back to ancient Greece and have evolved significantly over time.
Ancient Olympics
The ancient Olympic Games began in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BCE. They were held in honor of Zeus. Events included running, wrestling, boxing, chariot racing. Only free Greek men could participate. The games continued for over 1000 years until they were banned in 393 CE.
Modern Olympics
Revived by Pierre de Coubertin in 1896 in Athens. Modern Olympics are held every 4 years (Summer and Winter Games). The Olympic motto: “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (Faster, Higher, Stronger). The Olympic rings represent the five continents. The Olympic flame is lit in Olympia and travels to the host city.
Olympic Values
Excellence, friendship, respect. The Olympic Games promote peace and international understanding. Algeria has participated in the Olympics since 1964, winning medals in athletics and boxing.
