Phrasal Verbs Common Examples and Meanings
Phrasal verbs combine a verb with a preposition or adverb to create new meanings.
Common Phrasal Verbs
Look for: search. Look after: take care. Look forward to: anticipate. Give up: quit. Put off: postpone. Turn on/off: start/stop. Break down: stop functioning. Come across: find by chance.
Separable vs Inseparable
Separable: object can go between verb and particle. Turn off the light or turn the light off. Inseparable: object must follow. Look after the children.
Exercises
Replace with a phrasal verb: 1) I will search for my keys. 2) She takes care of her mother. 3) He quit smoking. 4) I anticipate your visit.
