Phrasal Verbs: Common Phrasal Verbs and Their Meanings

Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb + a preposition or adverb that create a new meaning. They are very common in English and essential for fluency.

Common phrasal verbs

• Look for: search. I’m looking for my keys.
• Turn on/off: start/stop. Turn on the TV.
• Get up: rise. I get up at 7.
• Pick up: collect. Pick up the phone.
• Put on: wear. Put on your coat.
• Take off: remove. Take off your shoes.
• Wake up: stop sleeping. Wake up!
• Come back: return. Come back soon.
• Go on: continue. Please go on.
• Give up: quit. Don’t give up.

Separable vs Inseparable

Some phrasal verbs are separable: Turn the light on = Turn on the light. Some are inseparable: Look after the children (NOT Look the children after).
