Conditional Sentences: If Clauses Type 1
Conditional sentences express a condition and its result.
Type 1: Real/Probable Condition
If + present simple, will + base verb
We use Type 1 for situations that are likely to happen in the future.
- “If it rains, I will stay at home.”
- “If you study hard, you will pass the exam.”
- “If he arrives late, the teacher will be angry.”
Position of “if”
If the “if” clause comes first, we use a comma: If you study, you will pass.
If the main clause comes first, no comma: You will pass if you study.
Other possible tenses
- If + present, imperative: “If you see him, tell him to call me.”
- If + present, can/may: “If you finish early, you can go home.”
